When Minecraft released a couple of years ago, it started a new genre of exploration games that hoped to capitalize on Markus “Notch” Perrson’s success. A new indie game using voxel sprites instead of straight up blocks called Cube World is looking to be that next big indie game to hit the PC market. Being developed by a single man who goes by “Wollay,” who updates his blog frequently documenting the development process, is setting his game apart from Minecraft by making it more like an action RPG and less like a “world creation, exploration” game.
Right now, Cube World is a year into its development, but judging by the information available it looks like it won’t launch quietly. Though the game’s graphical style makes it easy to compare it to Minecraft, Cube World will have a very large open world for you to explore with towns, quest-giving NPCs, dungeons and enemies littered about, according to Wollay.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s no customization in Cube World. You are able to find blueprints for different structures, which allows you to place buildings anywhere in your world. Your weapons have the ability to be altered with different cubes that you find throughout your adventures, ranging from simple iron ones that raise basic damage, to spirit cubes that add more magical effects. Wollay also plans on adding a crafting system in the near future.
Wollay has promised that everything in the single player game will be compatible in its multiplayer mode as well, although he hasn’t fully worked out how many players will be allowed in a server as of yet. Though Wollay is saying the game will be out “when it’s done,” ala Valve, this game looks like it has some promise. He has not decided on a price for the game.
